I have been here for the last one month. Pristine beaches, lovely people, space that is simply captivating and awesome. And there is the unique West Indian humour that is pretty evident.

# I had a guy and a lady , member of the bank staff (where I work) to receive me from the Airport in Providenciales. When I got dropped in the Apartment, I thanked her and she replied saying that I’m like her son and I need not thank her. While she was saying that, this guy interrupted and asked her if HE is not her son. She immediately replied - “You are the kind of son that a mom will love only on his pay-day”!!

# One other day, In the middle of the banking hall, a male staff member was actually showing off his tummy and shouting that something had bitten him badly and it was paining like hell ! There came an immediate reply from one of the corners – "May be it’s the chicken from inside" ;-) He checked with the Doctor regarding that unbearable pain and found that it was a Spider bite.
You must have guessed it by now- Next day, we all knew how to call him – "SPIDER MAN".

# My turn ;-) – I was at my desk when one of the staff barged in to ask a question while I was in the middle of some important work..….apparantely she realized that I was busy and checked if she was wasting my time, quite apologitically. I responded (obviously, on a lighter note) – “Don’t worry, I won't let you waste my time. That's precisely what this post is all about.

when I decided to get into the blogsville, I had a good mind to use my connection with the mafia and ask him to give a space in his blog to tell his visitors that I am back. (He he, I still have it, you listening Mr.Sambhar?)

As an extension of that, I started wondering how much blogsites can do in order to promote their own and other sites/products.

Imagine MTR or sakthi sambhar masala Ad pop-up when you land at this site, or an exagerrated situation where a company starts producing Thayirsaadham mix in order to put up their banner Ads at this popular site ;-D.

I can even foresee people selling or buying up a blogsite to ride on the credibility and the hit rates that a blogsite attract(as if these guys would let that happen!).

'Ads by google' is already a familiar box which one would like to ignore in most of the blogsites unless you have a deal with someone like these guys had.

The point is to get your hit rate and reviews going much ahead of other sites. everybody's watching you see.

"You Never Forget Your First Time"

I have been wanting to post this since the time I flew Kingfisher airline on a domestic leg in India. The moment I saw the e-ticket, I had the impression of flying a low cost airline. But then, I was proved wrong. Just when I reached the airport and got-off the car, I saw these helpers from this airline waiting for passengers to help them carry their baggage into the airport. You can easily recognise them with their red dress and the kingfisher logo on them. One of them came over to me and asked politely if I was flying Kingfisher. When I said yes, He offered to carry my baggage till the screening area and then on to the check-in counter.

I was even pleased with the way the lady at the check-in counter treated me and the good experience was carried on even to the plane. It was an 'ALL ECONOMY CLASS' flight with wider seats with personal screen on each one of them!. You get amazing hot food and goodies that included key chain,head-phone,candies all packed in a nice red pouch that can be used to carry your mobile phone or your sun-glasses.

Mind you, when I saw the fare on the ticket, I really had an impression that it was a low-cost carrier. So what I have come to understand is that there are full-cost carriers and there are low-cost no-frills airline and there are these 'value for money' airlines in between which are in existence.

And particularly about kingfisher, we know that it is owned by Vijay mallya. A person who I always prefer to call as the 'Richard Branson of India'. For your information, Richard Branson is the man at the helm of Virgin group and also owns Virgin Atlantic airways. I have not flown Virgin Atlantic, But I have read that the Virgin planes spoil customers with far superior service and choices.

They both are very similar in more than one characteristics. They are flamboyant, make enormous wealth, very powerful, so on.So I'm not surprised that they both have a strong red theme around their airlines.

Like the Virgin Ad goes,"You never forget your first time....". I truly agree with this advertisement in relation to flying Kingfisher Airlines.

If you consider the airline industry in India, The changes that are going through are as fast as these aircraft fly. We are Identical twins, even now. He works in Hyderabad and I work in Bangalore. It is so much fun having someone who is so identical that it gets you into some hilarious situations.

My brother is married for 4 years now and has a lovely boy who is just about 7 months old. I remember distinctly – During my Engagement that happened few months ago, I saw someone greeting my brother for engagement which is supposedly for ME! That is still better considering the fact that somebody asked me how my kid is! This is disastrous, right?

When both of us were working in Chennai, We bump into each other's colleagues who refused to believe that I was not him (or he was not me??)

There has been situations where he got to have sweets and paayasams twice. You guessed it how, obviously. I believe my Thatha & paati could not recognise who is who till their last breath.

There is this joke in our family that his father-in-law gave him a gold bracelet for his wedding just to identify easily who his ‘maapiley’ is ;-D!

He is particularly special to me and has similar likes, dislikes, preference, priorities, interest etc just like the looks. Sometimes I'm astonished that we actually think so much alike (somethings as trivial as buying same brand of tooth brush and the same colour, though living in different city!!). It is extremely nice to have him around as we both have a great sense of humour and understanding.

Not many experience this – when my Brother wishes me on my birthday and I reciprocate by saying ‘same to you’ daa! It gets too exhausting. But I look back and there were some hilarious moments too;-D

So many struggles I went through for the new gas connection that is simply not worth it. When I went to apply for it, I was told that it would take a maximum of three days to get it. Thought that was cool. I waited in vain. For 10 days. I went to their office, fuming with anger and I just blew them apart. I told the guy if he didn't deliver the cylinder before the day-end, I would complain to the union finance minister. Now, wait, where the heck this came from?? I didn’t know. I blurted it out without even thinking. Luckily, that dud didn’t know either;-D. Effect? Cylinder delivered.

But I’m pissed off with that cylinder fellow so much that even today, if I am irritated with something or someone else, I feel like calling him and blasting ;-)

When I had gone to check out the apartment before finalising, the owner was
rolling out that the apartment is the best I could get in the near
vicinity (I must say-the apartment is very classy indeed). She mentioned about loads of facilities available. Gym was one of them. And I was certainly thrilled. I'm just realising now that there is no need for that. My entire apartment is a gym for me.....with washing clothes, cleaning the floor and vessels, sweeping......all by myself.....romba koduma. Guess if I don't consider washing machine, vacuum cleaner, dish washer as a necessity now....bet I will be forced to settle for stretcher and walking stick as a permanent feature at my home.

Indha toilet clean pannara velaye thalavali. evallavuthaan
thechaalaum, innum konjam clean pannalaamnu thonum.

Eppodaapa monday varum, officeku pogamaatenaanu irukku ;-D

Even 20 days after moving in to the apartment and 21 power cuts (It happens in Bangalore!!), I didn’t notice that we had a generator for uninterrupted power supply. I believe it involves just pushing the switch meant for that inside the apartment. I didn't know that. Yesterday, while I was walking down the corridor to get into my apartment, I noticed all other apartments had power and not mine. Out of curiosity, I checked with our ever-friendly watchman. He came into my apartment and showed how it works and asked me 'ghothillaavaa?' in kannada with a funny face;-@. I had to tell that guy that I had trouble pushing the switch upward (my BIG bloody ego!)

The watchman- Indha aiyaa daily apartmentula irukara ella car'ayum clean pannuvaaru, provisions saamaan vaangindu varuvaaru, vegetables vaangindu varuvaaru, two-wheeler ellam clean pannuvaaru, Bank povaaraam (!!)....but avar enna velai pannaraarunaa - Watchman velaiyaam ;-)) Naanum adha nambanum. Thala ezhuthu.

My marriage is coming up next month. Now you are thinking there is finally going to be someone to share my work.....hmmmm....I’m hoping that my work doesn't get doubled;-D !!

Can you tell me??

I attempted to get the Haloscan comment box on to my blog. ET has got this habit - To snub its valued visitors / readers with such absurd and rude observations about their work/lifestyle etc. I think that a Business newspaper such as this (which has built a brand around its visibility) should be more responsible and be careful on its contents. A Newspaper's responsibility is not to be entertaining, but be informative (Let me admit-i liked the humour in this article!!). How far will ET go? How long are we going to take this?

I strongly protest. Take a look at this . you will agree with me.

The link to the stuff appended below is here.

ENGINEERING : One of only two signs that actually studied in school, it is said that ninety percent of all Personal Ads are placed by engineers. You can be happy with yourself: your office is typically full of all the latest gadgets. However, we all know what is really causing your carpal tunnel.

ACCOUNTING : The only other sign that studied in school, you are mostly immune from office politics. You are the most feared person in the organization; combined with your extreme organizational traits, the majority of rumors concerning you say that you are completely insane.

HUMAN RESOURCES : Ironically, given your access to confidential information, you tend to be the biggest gossip within the organization. Possibly the only other person that does less work than marketing, you are unable to return any calls today because you have to get a haircut, have lunch, and mail a letter!

MARKETING : You are ambitious yet stupid. You chose a marketing degree to avoid having to study in college, concentrating instead on drinking and socializing - which is pretty much what your job responsibilities are now. Least compatible with sales.

SALES : Laziest of all signs, often referred to as "marketing without a degree", you are also self-cantered and paranoid. Unless someone calls you and begs you to take their money, you like to avoid contact with "customers" so you can "concentrate on the big picture". You seek admiration for your golf game throughout your life.

TECHNOLOGY : Unable to control anything in your personal life, you are instead content to completely control everything that happens at your workplace. Often even you don't understand what you are saying, but who the hell can tell?! It is written that the Geeks shall inherit the Earth.

MANAGEMENT/ TEAM LEADERS : Catty, cut-throat, yet completely spineless, you are destined to remain at your current job for the rest of your life. Unable to make a single decision you tend to measure your worth by the number of meetings you can schedule for yourself. Best suited to marry other managers, as everyone in your social circle is a manager.

CUSTOMER SERVICE : Bright, cheery, positive, you are a fifty-cent cab ride from taking your own life. As a child very few of you asked your parents for a little cubicle for your room and a headset so you could pretend to play ‘customer service’. Continually passed over for promotions, your best bet is to manage your manager.

While on this, look at Kaps' post on the Bakwaas Times. Kaps has named ET appropriately.
Hope I have your permission to give this link, Kaps.

Drink for a good sleep or to think better????

Many parents in India give Horlicks to their children in hopes that it will help them excel in studies (I drink it even today!!).

In UK, Horlicks is sold as an aid to promoting sleep at night and the manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, is recommending a glass of Horlicks before going to bed to have a good sleep.

Horlicks is sold in India and UK. If you Visit the website of Horlicks, you'll find that the Horlicks India website is still under construction, whereas the UK site is up and running and clearly documents sleep related problems and how Horlicks helps in sleeping.

Malt contained in drinks such as Horlicks, Ovaltine, etc., is responsible for promoting sleep. People who drink alcohol will be familiar with malt, especially with barley malt, which is used in the process of producing beer, lager, etc. You might have even heard of malt whiskey.

What does this mean?!?! Horlicks helps in sleeping and hence, should not be given to students while they're trying to study!?

Many average children are already stressed out due to overload atschool. What is the point in making them drowsy and sleepy when they go to school or when they are trying to study! By the way, Don't miss to see the site. Read on-

As I walked into my office, my secretary, Janet, said, "Good morning Boss, Happy Birthday"
And I felt a little better; someone had remembered.
I worked until noon. Then, Janet knocked on my door and said "You know, it's such a beautiful day outside and it's your birthday . Let's go to lunch, just you and me." I said, "By George, that's the greatest thing I've heard all day. Let's go." We went to lunch. We didn't go where we normally go; we went out to the country to a little private place. We had two martinis and enjoyed lunch tremendously. On the way back to the office, she said, "You know, it's such a beautiful day. We don't need to go back to the office, do we?" I said,"No, I guess not." She said, "Let's go to my apartment." After arriving at her apartment , she said, "Boss, if you don't mind, I think I'll go into the bedroom and slip into something more comfortable."
"Sure," I excitedly replied. She went into the bedroom and, in about six minutes, came out carrying a big birthday cake, followed by my wife, children, and dozens of our friends, all singing Happy Birthday.
And there I sat...on the couch..........naked!!!

Monday Funda :-)

"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm." - Sir Winston Churchill

05-05-05

05-05-05: You obviously know that it happens only once in the life time. We hear about them – Some make lots of money. Some discover. Some represent the country. Some give. Some break the record of others and sometimes their own. Some gather attention. Some gather people. Some give their support. Some ask for it with all hurdles. Some are selfless. Some make it big.

Do I look up to film artistes as role models? We have enough and many who pray film stars. And get nothing but the ‘first-day-first-show’ kick, cut papers and 10 paisa toffee that are thrown inside the theatre.

What about sport stars? They play. They win or they lose. So why should they be role models? Is it because they represent their country? Is it for the hard work they put in and the commitment that they show? For once, I know that our Tendulkars and gangulys and sanias look forward to making it big in the Ad world through their play rather than taking their game seriously.

How many of us look up to politicians as role models? Even before pondering over that question, how many politicians we have/ had who are worth being a role model? What do they exactly inspire us to become? Is it their acumen? Is it the fact that they are in public service and the fact that think for the people (leave the fact that for most politicians, People essentially means his close and near ones!)

Is it safe to say that we can look up to the flourishing entrepreneurs and top notch CEOs as role models? Entrepreneurs – for nourishing their people management, procurement, manufacturing and marketing skills etc.
Top Notch CEOs- For knowing exactly what it takes to be in that hot seat, facing killer competition and spearheading an organization that is as big as it can get. But hey – End of the day, these people anyway thrive only on the consumer demand for their products and services. It would be a different ball game if they create an entirely new market for the product. That really takes a lot of mind-work, skill and guts.

What about super achievers? You thinking of Kalpana Chawla? AR Rehman? Aishwarya Rai? Ramanujam? Kasturi Rangan? Mahatma Gandhi? Did they all work single minded towards what they wanted? Were they born with certain skills or features or determination that makes them what they are? Did they have people telling them what they should do and to dream big? Without any doubt, they have created history. But have they done enough to get people look up to them?

Most often, people look for inspiration that are very far and few. We can even look up to people who we live with or someone who plays a very important role in our lives – take for example – School teachers, college professors, office colleagues, friends, good neighbours and of course our own parents, siblings!

Not everybody will have their parents as role models. If you ask me, my modest Dad will say that I must become bigger than him. Or my generous Mom who will bless me wherever I am. So they are not exactly role models. In fact, there is no single person who I look up to in my life. Don’t get me wrong. I take bits of inspiration from every known source, wherever they are.
I realize that it is imperative to look up to someone. It is even more important to decide who that is.

So who do I look up to?

Heights !

HEIGHT OF ISOLATION: Two persons sitting side by side using emails to communicate with each other.

HEIGHT OF COWARDICE: Two persons fighting through emails.

HEIGHT OF HELPLESSNESS: Receiving no emails for a week.

HEIGHT OF FRUSTRATION: The email server being down.

HEIGHT OF CARELESSNESS: Writing a love mail and doing a 'Send All.'

HEIGHT OF ACHIEVEMENT: A person sending email to a girl wanting to become friends and getting a reply.

HEIGHT OF TIMEPASS: A person sending email to himself.

HEIGHT OF EXPECTATION: Sending Indian cricket team an e-mail,wishing them to win a match.

HEIGHT OF REPETITION: Forwarding an email to someone and receiving the same email forwarded back to you by some one in the receiving chain.

HEIGHT OF BROWSING: You are swimming in the water pond and shout "F1 F1 F1 " instead of shouting "HELP" when you are unable to swim.

LEFT BRAIN VS RIGHT BRAIN

While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make CLOCKWISE circles. These days, We step into a mall and buy more than what we actually want!

Mobile phone was a distant dream about seven years ago. I carry a phone now. Not only that, I feel restless if I don’t have it with me except when I’m asleep. Its like my detachable sixth finger!! The penetration of mobile phone is so high that it has become fashionable not having a mobile now!

This incident happened about five years ago. I accompanied my mom to the local bank to withdraw some cash. I initiated a conversation with one of the officer and I was checking if he can give me a credit card application form (I used to work in a private bank then), I was startled when the officer asked me if I knew what a credit card was! These days a Gold Credit Card is just phone calls away – that too a life time free card with credit limits that I can never repay at one go if I use them fully!

By the way, you must know that I have never gone to the bank where my salary gets credited. The face of the bank to me is the Internet banking, Telephone banking and the ATMs. If I’m too fond of seeing the bank where I have an account, I have to shell out 100 bucks per entry. Unbelievable? Huh!
Gone are the days when every arterial road in a city had an ATM. These days every street or a lane has more than one ATM. Or if you prefer, the ATM will come near you. Thanks to the Mobile ATMs.

If you work for a company in a grade where you are eligible for II AC train ticket for all your official travel, I’m sure you must have got an intimation from your HR that from now on all your official travel will be by air because the train fare is expensive!. These days, all flights go choc-o-block and the Airports are no less than a fish market. Buddy - welcome to the world of low-cost air travel.

There are many more instances and changes that amaze me - The sophistication that we as consumers have got, the technology that facilitates turning dream to reality.

I wonder about people in my Country who have no access to all that I have mentioned.
I wonder about people who have little in hand to even survive.
While we go to ATMs and Malls and Airports - what about people who are there just outside begging for their livelihood.
I wonder if I can live without these.
I wonder what more I should expect.
I Wonder.

TFTD - Thought for the Day

If you feel like doing some work, sit down and wait until the feeling goes away ;-D

So what if your Boss is around ??!!

I was checking this website www.lastminute.com . I went to this site not because I wanted to shop online, but I have heard so much about this venture – started when the Internet was ‘IN’ and still surviving. The stock price of this company which is listed in the UK is a lot less than what it was during the boom period.

There has been a lot of news recently questioning whether the Internet bubble is about to burst. The current huge drop in the share price of lastminute.com – the flagship web site of young British Internet entrepreneurs – is seen by many as the first sign that Internet mania could have reached its peak and has started to plummet towards oblivion. This is some piece of information for you.

An Interesting Observation- Well, there is something more in this web-site than the usual ‘BUY THIS’ and ‘BUY THAT’. On the top right side of the web-page, I noticed something like “The boss is watching – look busy”. Clicking on that took me to a page displaying some ‘spreadsheets’ and ‘analysis’. This is obviously made up. Interesting. Now you know how to shop online for your holidays while at work and still escape from your BOSS if he watches you. But don't worry anyways - May be he is doing the same thing!!

HappyNewYear.Com

Hello All- Another great and a very special day. Its the beginning of New year to a whole lot of people in South India. My best wishes to those who celebrate the New year and to those who do not need a reason to celebrate!

My day began with three missed calls on my hand phone when i got up at six in the morning!!! The closest I could get to my folks on this lovely day is to make a call and wish them - Which I did. The Vadaa, Payasam and Mango pachadi is a must in every Tamil home on a new years day. But i settle for the normal routine in Bangalore as i live in a paying guest accommodation.

Watching those special 'New year' programs in Sun TV, Raj TV or Vijay TV at home is part of the celebrations these days! I bet everyone agrees with me.
For those looking for entertainment outside 'home sweet home', there's the 'Chandramukhi' and 'Mumbai Express' which is showing in theatres. There is so much craze for these movies even in Bangalore. The theatres are gonna go full house for the next one week or so. I might catch up with the movie in a day or two. I will give you the review on that immediately:-)

While on this, i have to tell you about something hilarious that happened yesterday - One of my friend was asking someone he knew if he got the tickets.......That tamil guy responded - ethuku? oorukaa?kovilukkaa? My friend (who thinks he is the biggest fan of Rajini!) got annoyed. he said in the famous 'Chennai Tamizh'- enna nakkalaa? Thalaivar padam naalaiku release aaguthu, nee ennadaanaa oorukaa, kovilukkaanu kekare?.....i was laughing for the next ten minutes continuously.

In my opinion, the greatest way to celebrate any occasion, or for that matter, any day is to be with people who love to spend time with you. And being nice to them and to show commitment and confidence in the relationship. So what are you still looking at? Spread the message. Show to your loved ones that you care and celebrate. Have a nice day. Happiness Always.

The title of this article is dedicated to the silicon valley of India that I live in.

Cooool terms

One good soul sent me this stuff.Thought i must share it with you. I found it very interesting. Especially the one on 'Cellular Macarena'!! Enjoy.

Anticipointment: The feeling you get when a product or event doesn't live up to its own hype. "Windows ME was a huge anticipointment."

Audio caffeine: High energy, stimulating music that gets you moving in the morning.

BHNC: Big Hat, No Cattle. Another way of saying "all talk, no action”. Alludes to bragging cowboys.

Bobbleheading: The mass nod of agreement by participants in a meeting to comments made by the boss even though most have no idea what he just said.

Cellular Macarena: The dance that occurs when a cellular phone rings in a public place. Everyone reaches for their coat pocket, front pants pocket, back pants pocket, etc.

Director of First Impressions: A receptionist. Once the punch line of an Internet joke, it's now an actual job title at some companies.

Entity: A legitimate word that once primarily heard in science fiction stories. "Sorry, Captain, but the interference is being caused by an unknown entity. Now the business sector is abusing the term: "We've established a strategic partnership with another entity." Translated: "We don't really know how to do that so we have outsourced that part of the job to another company."

Forward-worthy: E-mail deemed worthy of being passed along to friends and colleagues.

Generation O: Move aside Gen X! The O stands for obesity since the latest generation of kids are the fattest in history.

Sept. 10: Anything that's outdated, old-fashioned or no longer cool. Used to describe the world that existed prior to Sept. 11, 2001. "That dress is so Sept. 10."

Spinach cinema: A movie that’s supposedly “good for you,” but you dread having to see.

Surfer's voice: The inattentive, half-hearted tone (punctuated with surreptitious tapping of a keyboard) that means the person on the other end of the phone is more focused on surfing the Web, reading e-mails and trading instant messages than listening to you.

Vampire creativity: Marketing term for a commercial that is so creative and entertaining that people remember the ad, but not the product being sold

'Phone'tastic

I have lived in Uganda for about 4 months when i was there on an official assignment.I have a friend there with whom i was having a light discussion on how technology can confuse people. Since i come from the software industry, i cant help but get puzzled about the 'gadgets' around me. I was narrating to her how the other day in my office (in Bangalore) when i wanted to reach someone, I lifted the receiver of my phone and started typing the numbers on my computer key board (Can you believe it actually happened!!?!!) I only felt better off after listening to what she had to say. She mentioned that once she wanted to talk to her friend from her work phone. After realising that she had typed in the wrong number, she was actually looking for a 'Backspace' button on the instrument!! If you can beat this, post it.
